This cell line was established in 1987 by Kitamura T et al., and was derived from a heparinized bone marrow sample from a 35-year-old Japanese male with severe pancytopenia. Cell growth was entirely dependent on IL-3 or GM-CSF and did not respond to IL-5. Various lymphocytes and cytokines have effects on the cells, such as IL-1, IL-4, IL-6, IL-9, IL-11, IL-13, CSF, LIF, and NGF. The cells did not express glycoprotein A and carbonic anhydrase I. The morphological and cytochemical characteristics of the cell and the constitutive expression of globin gene showed that the cells belonged to erythroid. Hemin and δ aminolevulinic acid induced the synthesis of hemoglobin, and TPA stimulated the cells to differentiate into macrophage-like cells.
