U-118 MG and U-138 MG are cytogenetically similar and have at least six derived marker chromosomes. This was one of the cell lines constructed by J. Ponten and colleagues from malignant gliomas (others including ATCC HTB-14, ATCC HTB-16 and ATCC HTB-17) during 1966 ~ 1969. Mycoplasma contamination was removed by BM-Cyline culture for 6 weeks in 1987.
