<ns2:CLO_0051626 xml:lang="en">OP9 cell lines are derived from the cranium of newborn op/op mice. Because of a mutation in the gene encoding M-CSF, it does not produce a functional macrophage clone stimulating factor (M-CSF). The presence of M-CSF has an inhibitory function on the differentiation of embryonic stem cells (ES) into blood cells rather than other macrophages. OP9 cells can be used to co-culture with mouse embryonic stem cells to induce differentiation of embryonic stem cells into erythropoietic-derived, bone marrow-derived and B-cell lineage blood cells. Co-culture with OP9 does not require exogenous growth factors or complex embryonic structures. This system is useful for studying the molecular mechanism of the development and differentiation of hematopoietic cells.</ns2:CLO_0051626>
