Darby established MDBK cell line from a normal adult bovine kidney. In 1973, the MDBK cell was infected with bovine viral diarrhea virus(BVDV). In 1982, an MDBK cell strain which was not infected by BVDV was discovered. This cell was originally from the frozen storage tube of the 96th generation of ATCC in July 1967. The progeny of this MDBK cell were detected by NVSL and no evidence for any virus pollution was found. In August 1982, R.A. Van Deusen, was passaged to 110th generation when supplied to ATCC. This cell line was not infected with BVDV.
