Haemophilus influenzae type B is the most common bacterial causative agent, although some cases are attributable to Streptococcus pneumoniae or Streptococcus pyogenes. Epiglottitis typically affects children, and is associated with fever, difficulty in swallowing, drooling, hoarseness of voice, and stridor.
