Numerous blood vessels and an absence of smooth muscle cells are characteristic of this layer and therefore it does not express markers of smooth muscle (such as smooth muscle actins (alpha-actin and gamma-actin) or smooth muscle myosins (myosin heavy chain) or Tgfb1). At E14-E16, the suburothelial lamina propria expresses higher levels of Ptch1, Gli1 and is marked by Snai1 at E17.
