Specifically, the term is often used by transphobic individuals and groups to denote transgender women that they deem to be men, usually based solely on physical appearance. Two different etymologies have been proposed for the slur "troon." One is that the term originated on the Something Awful forums as a portmanteau of "transgender" and "goon" (a colloquial term for individuals who frequented the Something Awful forums). The other is that the term is a combination of "transgender" and "loon".
