Evolutionary psychologists hold that behaviors or traits that occur universally in all cultures are good candidates for evolutionary adaptations. In many cases, "evolutionary psychology" has become a dogwhistle for ethnocentrism, white nationalism, and eugenics. Evolutionary psychologists have claimed that rape is an evolutionary adaptation, that the "hourglass" figure in women is a result of evolution, that phobias are innate, that being gay is a "maladaptive" behavior, and that IQ and race are linked at a genetic level (a form of scientific racism). Multiple evolutionary psychologists, including Marc Hauser and Diederik Stapel have admitted to fabricating evidence to support their theories. The field as a whole should be suspect, as should individuals claiming the label of evolutionary psychology.
