(1999). A number of investigators disagreed strongly with the creation of the new genus (Schacter et al., 2001, but see Everett and Andersen, 2001). The Subcommittee on the taxonomy of the Chlamydiae agree with the novel species described by Everett et al., but disagree with those authors concerning the creation of a novel genus (Greub, 2010). The Subcomittee has proposed examination of genome sequences of Chlamydieaceae strains to address the issue of reunification of the genera Chlamydia and Chlamydophila (Greub, 2010b). Recently, Kuo et al. (2011), in order to reassign the the novel species described by Everett et al. and placed by them in the genus Chlamydophila, have published new combinations using the genus epithet Chlamydia in place of Chlamydophila. However, these combinations have not been validly published as of this writing. Given the contentious nature of the issue, the NCBI Taxonomy Database retains both genus names for use by submitters. For species names, priority in the Database is given to the original form of the validly published name (Chlamydia <species> OR Chlamydophila <species>) pending validation of the new combinations of Kuo et al., or other resolution of the issue.
