However, their roles are different in these processes. In the early phase of viral infection, preexisting IRF-3 is activated and induces expression of IFN beta and IFN alpha4. These early produced IFNs transcriptionally induce IRF-7, and upon viral infection, the induced high-level IRF-7 is activated and transactivates multiple IFN genes, leading to robust production of IFNs in response to viral infection. IPS-1 interacts with both IRF3 and IRF7 and recruits them to RIG-1. TBK1/IKKi kinases phosphorylate and activate IRF3/IRF7.
