Mutations in the ALD gene encoding ALDP result in the X-linked neurodegenerative disorder adrenoleukodystrophy (Roerig et al. 2001). They are involved in metabolic transport of long and very long chain fatty acids into peroxisomes. ATP binding/hydrolysis by and phosphorylation of PMP70 and ALDP are involved in the regulation of fatty acid transport into peroxisomes (Tanaka et al. 2002).
