This heterologous protein protein interaction seems to be an important factor in maintaining the normal permeability characteristics of the slit diaphragm by relaying signals from the extracellular side into the podocyte. Interestingly, the Nephrin-NEPH heterodimer formation is highly conserved from C.elegans to human and serves different functions in different species and different tissues.
