Its primary effect is to regulate the pH of the duodenal contents via the control of gastric acid secretion and buffering with bicarbonate. These effects are mediated by the SCT receptor (Patel DR et al, 1995). The receptor activity is mediated by coupling to G protein alpha s subunits, which stimulate adenylyl cyclase which increases intracellular cAMP levels (Patel DR et al, 1995).
