Its effects are mediated by coupling with the G protein alpha G q/11 and G12/13 subunits (Lee CW et al, 2006). Mutations in the P2RY5 gene cause a rare, inherited form of hair loss called Hypotrichosis simplex. It is the first receptor in humans known to play a role in hair growth (Pasternack SM et al, 2008).
