It triggers ovulation in females and stimulates Leydig cell production of testosterone in males. It mediates its action by binding to the LH receptor (Minegishi T et al, 1990, Jia XC et al, 1991), which is found in the ovary, testes and uterus. The activated receptor couples to the G protein alpha-s subunit (Gilchrist RL et al, 1996) which activates adenylate cyclase and increases intracellular cAMP levels.
