It modulates the release of various neurotransmitters. Multiple transcripts encode proteins with distinct C-terminal sequences, but the full-length nature of some transcript variants has not been determined (Blondel O et al, 1998). The 5-HT6 receptor (Kohen R et al, 1996) is primarily expressed in the brain and is involved in glutamatergic and cholinergic neuronal activity. The 5-HT7 receptor (Stam NJ et al, 1997) plays a role in vasculature smooth muscle relaxation and in the GI tract.
