They are related to classical biogenic amines such as histamine, serotonin and catecholamines. The trace amine receptor TAR1 was identified in rat (Borowsky et al. 2001; Bunzow et al. 2001) and recognized to be a member of a family of trace amine-associated receptors (TAARs). Humans have seven subtypes plus a number of pseudogenes (TAAR1,2,3,5,6,8 and 9). Only one of these has been demonstrated to respond to trace amines, TAAR1. These receptors mediate their actions by coupling with the G protein alpha-s subtype, which activates adenylate cyclase and elevates cellular cAMP levels.
