It is best known for its roles in female reproduction: it is released in large amounts during labour facilitating birth and afterwards, breastfeeding. It also acts as a neurotransmitter in the brain. The actions of oxytocin via the oxytocin receptor (Kimura T et al, 1992) are mediated by G proteins which activate a phosphatidylinositol-calcium second messenger system.
