LKB1:STRAD:MO25 complex phosphorylates AMPK constantly. This phosphorylation is immediately removed in basal conditions by PP2C, but if the cellular AMP:ATP ratio rises, binding of AMP by AMPK inhibits the dephosphorylation, and the maintained phosphorylation results in activation of the AMPK.
