Germinal centers typically have one side containing mostly larger centroblasts and the other side containing mostly small centrocytes. The side with more centroblasts appears darker on an H&E stained section and is termed the dark zone and the other side appears lighter and is termed the light zone. This polarization of germinal center topology is often visualized on H&E stained sections of reactive lymph nodes but may not be as obvious if the germinal centers are small or if the specific section happens to contain mostly dark zone or mostly light zone.
