Marginal zones are a rim/band of lymphocytes surrounding mantle zones in secondary follicles (those containing germinal centers), and are typically only visualized in specific locations such as Peyer patches of the small bowel, or spleen, and not normally seen in lymph nodes. Expansion of marginal zones should prompt evaluation for a possible marginal zone lymphoma.
