Fasciitis Unusual fascia infection Increased susceptibility to infection of the fascia and surrounding soft tissue, as manifested by necrotizing fasciitis or other invasive fascial infection occurring in an unusual clinical context. Necrotizing fasciitis is a rapidly progressive, life-threatening infection of the superficial fascia and subcutaneous tissue. Principal causative agents include Streptococcus pyogenes (type I, monomicrobial) and polymicrobial infections involving anaerobes, Gram-negative organisms, and Staphylococcus aureus (type II). Immunocompromise is present in approximately 50% of cases.
