High concentrations of Lp(a) are associated with atherothrombotic disease i.e. myocardial infarction, stroke, peripheral vascular disease and childhood thromboembolism. The covalent Lp(a) complex is assembled in plasma from low-density lipoprotein (LDL) and apolipoprotein(a), a plasminogen-related glycoprotein.
