Mutant strains carrying inactivated uvrA genes are typically less sensitive than recA mutants because there is only the loss of the nucleotide excision repair system, just one subset of the larger repair networks. However, it was found that the recA mutant conferred only a modest sensitivity to UV, substantially less sensitive than the uvrA mutant. High basal recA expression was observed in the uvrA repair mutant.
