antifungal polyene Polyenes are a group of antifungals that directly bind to and remove the ergosterol present in the fungal cell membrane. This results in the loss of membrane permeability, subsequent membrane leakage, and eventually cell death. Structurally, polyenes are characterized by the presense of poly-unsaturated organic compounds that contain at least three alternating double and single carbon–carbon bonds. Four models of the polyene mode of antifungal action have been proposed: the pore forming model, the surface adsorption model, the sterol sponge model and the oxidative damage model.
