These symptoms may become worse after walking or standing. The condition generally only affects one side of the body, although both sides may be involved in up to 20% of cases. Meralgia paresthetica is caused by compression of the lateral femoral cutaneous nerve (a sensory nerve to the skin on the outer thigh). This may be associated with a variety of causes such as tight clothing, obesity, and/or pregnancy. Treatment is based on the signs and symptoms present in each person and may include medications to manage pain. In most cases, conservative treatment by wearing looser clothing and/or losing weight generally resolves symptoms.
