external exposure facility BIOLOGICAL IRRADIATION FACILITY (BIO) Paul Schofield website The Biological Irradiation Facility (BIO) operates within the Budapest Neutron Centre (BNC) at the research reactor, providing neutron dose rates of 0.023–14 mGy/s and co-produced gamma dose rates for biological irradiation studies. The channel lock consists of three steel and heavy concrete segments rotatable around an eccentric axis, with a remotely controlled internal filter system using thermal and epithermal absorbers and a movable collimator on a rail to achieve uniform, homogeneous irradiation. The facility supports studies on radiation damage to electronics and biological systems, and characterisation of realistic neutron spectra for radiation protection applications.
