external exposure facility Trento Facility for Proton Irradiation The TIFPA (Trento Institute for Fundamental Physics and Applications) proton irradiation facility is embedded in the Trento Proton Therapy Centre, which started clinical operations in October 2014 and has treated over 300 patients. The experimental area consists of a multifunctional preparation room and an irradiation cave where the clinical beam line is split into 'Biology' and 'Physics' sub-branches, both delivering horizontal proton beams at clinical energies of 70–228 MeV at dose rates of 0.1–2 Gy/min. Beam time applications are evaluated by a Program Advisory Committee (PAC), and personal dosimeters and radiation protection documentation are required.
