radiation epidemiology cohort The German uranium miners cohort study (WISMUT cohort) Paul Schofield The WISMUT cohort includes approximately 59,000 male uranium miners employed between 1946 and 1989 in the former East German uranium mining company, with strengths including large size, long follow-up (mean 37 years), 25,438 total deaths, a wide range of radiation exposures and availability of information on silica, fine dust and arsenic dust. Individual cohort data are accessible to the scientific community for investigating dose-response relationships for cancer and non-cancer mortality; an associated biobank at BfS holds peripheral blood lymphocytes, DNA, RNA and plasma from 442 high/low-exposed workers plus over 400 lung cancer cases. Access to cohort data or biobank material requires submission of a proposal to BfS.
