<ns4:IAO_0000115>Petiole- The second abdominal segment immediately following the alitrunk, which is usually reduced and always isolated. Generally the petiole takes the form of a node or of a scale of varying shape and size, but in some taxa it may be very reduced, represented by only a narrow, subcylindrical segment that may be overhung and concealed by the gaster. The petiole bears the second abdominal spiracle and usually consists of a distinct tergite and sternite. The former may have differentiated laterotergites low down on the side. In some groups the petiolar tergite and sternite have fused together. See also Abdomen, Peduncle. (Bolton, B. (1994). Identificstion guide to the ant genera of the world.
