In Vibrio fischeri, luminescence is produced when luciferase, composed of LuxA and LuxB, converts FMNH2, O2 and an aliphatic aldehyde (RCHO) to FMN, water and an aliphatic acid. LuxC and LuxE recycle the aliphatic acid, which is also produced by LuxD, to regenerate the RCHO substrate, while LuxG and other proteins in the cell reduce FMN using NADH to supply luciferase with FMNH2 [PMID:17590235].</ns3:IAO_0000115>
