This VBO term should therefore be used specifically for the breed conforming to this concept. Rød Dansk Malkerace anno 1970 (RDM-1970) In the 1840s, original cattle on the Eastern Danish islands were crossed with red cattle from the Southern part of Denmark. Three groups of cattle were used: Angler Cattle, Northern Slesviger Cattle and Ballum Cattle. The resulting cattle was the foundation for the Red Danish Dairy Cattle, RDM, officially formed in 1878. The RDM was most popular in the 1950s but it has decreased a lot since then. From the late 1970s the breed association introduced breeding material from other breeds, e.g. Brown-Swiss, Red Holstein and Swedish Red, into the RDM. Only a small fraction of the breeders continued pure-breeding after this, and they formed "RDM-1970". Subsequently, a small group of breeders formed the "RDM-1930" - a slightly different line.
