In 1949 this breed was pooled with an increasing population of Dutch and German black and white cattle, and this new synthetic breed was called SDM or Sortbroget dansk Malkerace. Since 1965 imports of semen from other black and white populations, mainly from USA and Canada, but lately also from Holland and France, has taken place. To date (1998) the Danish Friesian is a strain of the international HF-breed, with only 25% of its genes originating from the original Danish dual purpose breed from 1965 (SDM-1965).
