This VBO term should therefore be used specifically for the breed conforming to this concept. The name of the breed comes from the Saavedra experimental station where the breed has been selected primarily for milk yield corrected for fertility in a humid tropical environment. Criollo cows of the area were purchased with a small number of bulls thought to be above average in their performance (no milk records existed). Semen was imported from Criollo herds selected for milk yield in a similar environment in Cuba, Nicaragua, Costa Rica and Brazil. Although the herd is surely highly heterozygous it is physically uniform (colour ranges from Guernsey colour without the white patches to Jersey colour).
