Its genetic base makes reference to the Criollo cattle that originally came from Spain starting from 1492. This breed was crossed with varieties of Zebu, mainly the Guzerat and Missouri. These were bulls of red colour, presumably of African origin that gave red offspring. The Nelore breed coming from Louisiana and kept by cattle breeders in the eastern region of the country were also used as sire line.
