Darwin located a few specimen in the Northern part of the Rio de la Plata (now Uruguay) in 1833. At his request, he received information from Dr. Mu√ɬ±iz who contributed with biological data to his studies on the evolution of the species. Further studies by Domingo F. Sarmiento in 1885 and, more recently, by Corquera in 1982, conclude with the extinction of this variety. Due to Dr. Wilkins (British Mission in Bolivia) doubts, investigations were initiated in north western Argentina (Province of Jujuy), where a few specimen of √É‚Äòato cattle were located and a breeding unit for characterization was initiated. The concept of “breed reported in geographic location by FAO National Coordinators” is unique to DAD-IS (https://www.fao.org/dad-is/en/).
