Breed is created by crossing of mountain horses of Bukovina (region of Carpathian), Galicia and Hungary with stallions of haflinher and pintzgauer breeds and horses of Oriental type, including the Arabian breed. At the beginning of XX century purebred saddle horses were used in crossings - Anglo-Arab, and later Kabardian horses. But there is thought, that this breed is direct descendants of tarpans (silverfish).
