This VBO term should therefore be used specifically for the breed conforming to this concept. The work with the breed in Ukraine began in 1868, when to Poltava region was imported cart horses from Western European countries, mainly from Belgium. Local mares (partially improved by various other breeds before) were crossed with Belgian Mountain Arden sires, to a lesser extent with Brabants and Persherons. Till 1920 in the breed of Russian Ardens there were formed several breed types. The smallest, but most uniform proportional figure had Dibrovsky Arden. In 1929 Dibrovsky cart horses of Mariupol national farm was transferred to Novooleksandrivka stud, where selection work was being built on cross lines with simultaneous application of inbreeding.
