breed reported in geographic location South African Black Ostrich, South Africa (Ostrich) https://www.fao.org/dad-is The SA Black ostrich is the result of a selection and breeding programme that started between 1857 and 1864 in the Oudtshoorn district of the Western Cape Province. Breeding material was imported from Libya, Morocco, Syria, Algeria and Tunisia to improve feather quality. By 1911, the SAB feathers were superior to any wild ostrich. The collapse of the feather industry led to diversification and the development of the leather and meat industries. Most of this work was done by the Klein Karoo Agricultural Corporation and the Klein Karoo Agricultural development center. The breed is now classified as Struthio camelus domesticus.
