<ns5:origindescription>In Merak-Sakten (Eastern Bhutan), the oral history seems to trace their origin to Tsona in south-east Tibet. It was stated that the present day residents of Merak-Sakten migrated with their yaks and sheep to avoid the wrath of their local ruler. The time of their migration could be dated to 7th century during the era the famous king Srongtsen Gampo (Wangmo, undated). In the black mountain ranges of central Bhutan, local people refer to Tibet as the source of their sheep. In Tshirang shepherds describe their indigenous sheep as Bonpala and Garpala, which is the nomenclature use for indigenous sheep in Sikkim (Vij et al.1997).These sheep are considered to share a close relationship with the Tibetan breeds. The sheep in southern Bhutan(in the districts of Samtse, lower Chukha, Sarpang) could have similarities with the north-east Indian breeds.</ns5:origindescription>
<rdfs:comment>The concept of “breed reported in geographic location by FAO National Coordinators” is unique to DAD-IS (https://www.fao.org/dad-is/en/). This VBO term should therefore be used specifically for the breed conforming to this concept.</rdfs:comment>
