This VBO term should therefore be used specifically for the breed conforming to this concept. Coloured Mountain Sheep is a native variety of the old, primitive and large breed group known as Zackel, which can be found in the Southern Carpathian Mountains and a part of Balkans. It was brought to Poland together with the white variety during the period of Wallachia-Russian pastoral tribes relocation along the chain of the Carpathian Mountains lasting from the 14th to 16th century. After World War II, along with taking action for improving the white variety of Zackel, name "Polish Mountain Sheep" was accepted for the whole group.
